The Little Spyder

Few Porsche shapes are as pure as the 550 Spyder. Built for racing rather than the road, the tiny mid-engined sports car made its mark at the 1954 Carrera Panamericana, taking a class victory and finishing third overall against cars with considerably more power. To celebrate 75 years of Porsche Motorsport, Hedley Studios has brought that spirit back in miniature with the Porsche 550 J, an officially licensed reimagining handcrafted in Bicester.

At around 80 per cent of the original’s size, the 550 J measures just 2.9 metres long and weighs its diminutive proportions with a fully electric 48-volt drivetrain. It produces around 8 kW as standard, rising to 16 kW with the RS Package, with a top speed of approximately 80 km/h. It is strictly a collector’s piece rather than a road car, designed instead to capture something of the character, simplicity and visual purity of the original.

Porsche opened its archives to Hedley Studios during development, helping ensure that the recreation remained close to the spirit of the 1954 car. Buyers can choose from a selection of period-inspired colours and motorsport liveries, while the Bespoke programme allows almost every detail to be tailored. Limited to 250 examples, each 550 J is handcrafted in the UK. A small Porsche, then, but one carrying a surprisingly large piece of racing history.
