Bentley x Stefan Marjoram

At this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bentley welcomed renowned automotive illustrator Stefan Marjoram as its artist in residence, documenting both classic and contemporary models through a series of live sketches.

Working from life rather than photographs, Marjoram produced original illustrations throughout the event, capturing everything from a century-old Bentley to the latest Flying Spur S. Despite the decades separating them, he found a shared character running through every car. "They all have the same presence, the same confidence, the same stance," he says, describing Bentley's unmistakable blend of sporting luxury.

His approach varied with the subject matter. Contemporary Bentleys were rendered in a bold, graphic style inspired by the dramatic reflections of 1950s American automotive design, while the marque's historic models were drawn using softer, classical techniques reminiscent of red chalk on toned paper.

A former Creative Director at Aardman Animations, Marjoram brought a sense of warmth and personality to his work, often chatting with visitors as they watched each drawing take shape on his iPad. For him, sketching live isn't just about the finished artwork, it's about slowing down, observing and connecting with the people and machines that make Goodwood one of the automotive calendar's most celebrated events.
