Flat Out by Joshua Vides

Joshua Vides has made a career of blurring the line between reality and illustration. The Los Angeles-based artist's signature black-and-white aesthetic strips everyday objects back to what he calls "Reality to Idea", transforming three-dimensional forms into what look like hand-drawn sketches.

His latest installation, Flat Out, has just opened at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles, turning a mechanic's workshop into a life-sized drawing. Cars, tools and the garage itself are meticulously painted with bold black outlines, creating a surreal world where perspective collapses and everything appears lifted straight from a sketchbook.

On show at the Petersen Automotive Museum until July 2027, Flat Out is a striking reminder that the car can be as much a canvas for creativity as it is a machine.
