Opel’s Group B moment
Built as Opel’s road-going homologation special, the Manta 400 evolved from the Ascona 400 with rear-wheel drive, a Cosworth-developed 2.4-litre engine and the sort of flared bodywork that made 1980s rally cars so unforgettable.
Just 245 examples were produced, making the Manta 400 a rare sight even when new. While four-wheel drive ultimately changed the game, the Opel became a favourite with fans thanks to its distinctive shape, evocative soundtrack and tail-happy character. In Britain, Russell Brookes’ Andrews Heat for Hire car remains one of its most memorable competition versions.
This example has been in the same ownership since 2009 and has undergone a comprehensive bare-shell restoration by Retropower. Finished in its original Polar White, it was professionally converted to right-hand drive and rebuilt with renewed suspension, running gear and braking systems.
There are also a few subtle nods to its rally heritage, including wider 10-inch rear wheels, 8-inch fronts, an alloy radiator, oil cooler and stainless-steel exhaust. The factory-style stripes are painted rather than applied as decals, keeping the finish suitably authentic. A rare survivor from the golden age of rallying, restored properly and still rear-wheel drive.
