Return of the Brat Pack

Gymkhana’s gone rogue again, and this time, Travis Pastrana’s behind the wheel of a Subaru BRAT on steroids. Unveiled at this year’s SEMA Show, the Subaru Brataroo 9500 Turbo is an active-aero monster built for the wildest Gymkhana film yet. The next instalment, Aussie Shred, lands in December and takes the chaos Down Under – fittingly, in the country that coined the term ‘hoon’.

The Brataroo is a 1978 Subaru BRAT reimagined for flight as much as drift. Built by Vermont SportsCar and styled by designer Khyzyl Saleem (The Kyza), it’s a carbon-clad, rally-bred beast pushing 670bhp from a fire-spitting 2.0-litre turbo boxer. Pastrana’s latest toy revs past 9,500rpm and sends power through a six-speed sequential gearbox and full-time AWD setup.

Underneath, it’s all trick engineering and lightweight fury – WRC-grade cage, active aero and a choice of two morphing rear wings that adjust on the fly to control pitch mid-jump. The throwback livery leans into ‘70s Subaru nostalgia with Outback sunsets, thumbs-up kangaroos and a hint of Dixxon plaid for good measure.

Inside, it’s part time capsule, part spaceship. Carbon fibre meets faux wood grain, a retro radio now controlling active aero and just enough nods to the original BRAT to keep old-school fans grinning.
