Rallying’s radical wedge

Few shapes in motorsport stop you in your tracks quite like the Lancia Stratos. A wedge on wheels dreamt up from Bertone’s Stratos Zero concept and sharpened by Gandini’s pen, it was built for one thing only: domination. With a Ferrari Dino V6 tucked in behind the seats and styling that looked straight from the future, the Stratos redefined what a rally car could be.

This particular example has lived the life. First registered in Italy in 1976, it was converted to full Group 4 spec the very next year and went on to rack up serious results. Franco Leoni and Giuseppe Borgo took it to multiple wins in the 1982 Italian Rally Championship, including outright glory at the Rally Valli Imperiesi. It’s since seen action at Silverstone with Björn Waldegård at the wheel, and more recently tackled the Tour de Corse Historique in its bold black, red and white Pirelli colours.

The Stratos has always been more than just a rally car. It’s a statement of what happens when radical design meets unfiltered purpose. Even today, when it howls past in that Pirelli livery, it doesn’t just look fast, it looks inevitable.
